An unfair dismissal in Lanzarote

October 24 2017 (11:21 WEST)

I have learned of the imminent and unexpected dismissal of the Commissioner of the National Police of Arrecife, Mr. Luis Mayandía Fernández, apparently because a subordinate cowardly recorded a meeting with the rest of his colleagues in which he incorrectly alluded to a magistrate and a political position.

This dismissal is curious and strange, due to its disproportion. Especially considering that the criminal procedure against him has been dismissed by the court on the fly, and that both the magistrate alluded to and the political position, good acquaintances of Luis, have already shown him their unconditional support privately. I would not be surprised if they publicly issued notes of support requesting his permanence in the position. And anyone who knows Mr. Commissioner knows of his closeness, his healthy, frank and honest camaraderie, but compatible with the highest honesty, loyalty and professional dedication.

Hopefully these requests do not fall on deaf ears. I feel obliged to join them with this letter.

I met Mr. Commissioner on the occasion of the tough and long defense of some National Police officers for some serious crimes. I was struck by the fact that this Gentleman, with capital letters, contacted me without knowing me at all and for events that had occurred years before his arrival in Lanzarote. The continued interest he has shown in this matter, the repeated conversations and calls of concern give a good measure of his professional and personal worth, having behaved, more than as a boss, as a father with these agents and their families. From the first moment one has the sensation of knowing one of those few people who, with plenty of professional merits (his decorations abound, and his anecdotes and professional experience are enough for several good books), stands out for a personal value that is born from the deepest and best of the human being. I will always remember that he asked for a week of his personal vacations to attend as public, dressed in gala and accompanied by superiors, to the long sessions of the trial held in Las Palmas, in support of his colleagues and their families. Something that I had never seen before and I doubt I will ever see again in my life.

For details like this (impossible to reflect here all the efforts in helping colleagues who have suffered personal misfortunes, for example), for all the help provided directly and at street level (I have seen it) to the citizen in need of protection or guidance, also for all the facilities that he has provided to the lawyers of this island in their work -many have conveyed their concern and regret to me-, for the indelible mark he has left on the students of the School of Legal Practice -they feel a special pain, I know -, it is an honor for me to have met him.

The creation of the motorized brigade is his merit, increasing the presence and coordination and speed in police action in Arrecife, for the benefit of the citizens. Time will tell if, in the absence of Luis, this brigade remains or is erased from the map.

What a pity of a country in which the one who always climbs is the one who, due to lack of his own merits, tries to shine not by his own light, but by stepping on or disloyally covering the light of those who have plenty! What a pity that those who have the capacity to make decisions like this one, for which I protest today, allow it, surely because today they ignore a good part of the merits to which I refer in this letter! Let these letters serve at least so that, if whoever has the power to restore an unfair situation reads it, he does so and keeps this enormous professional in his position. We want him here, because above those who appreciate him, who loses, let no one doubt it, is the island of Lanzarote and those of us who inhabit and love it.

In short, let my simple tribute and embrace go from here. For my solitary work, I have never had a boss, but if I ever have to have one, let it be Mr. Luis Mayandía Fernández. I hope to see you here again soon as Commissioner.

Health and strength, partner, time has already proven you right.
