Yaiza approves the construction of the Wrestling Arena and a Center for Cultural and Leisure Workshops in Uga

The plenary session of the Yaiza City Council approved last Wednesday the motions presented by councilor Olivia Cedrés (PSC-PSOE) for the construction of the Wrestling Arena in Uga, the conversion of the warehouse owned by the City Council in the same town into a Center for Cultural Workshops, the creation of the Municipal Youth Council and the revitalization of socio-cultural centers. All four socialist proposals were supported by the various political groups represented in the Institution.

Olivia Cedrés demanded from the government team (CC-PIL) "political will" for the construction of the Wrestling Arena in Uga as a measure of "support and promotion of sports in general and the maintenance of traditional values in particular". In this sense, she demanded the recovery "of the existing hole in the area for more than a decade but in which no intervention has been made to date".

The socialist councilor also proposed the reconversion of the Warehouse owned by the City Council in Uga into a Multipurpose Leisure and Culture Center. Specifically, she requested that this space be transformed into a center dedicated to cultural workshops, a rehearsal place for folkloric or cultural groups. The southern councilor recalled that the warehouse was created as support for the farmers and ranchers of Yaiza, however, and taking into account the creation of the agricultural market and the investments being made for the primary sector in the Uga Valley, she requested the change of use. "The warehouse could be used for cultural purposes, although the possibility of dividing it and using it for both sectors should not be ruled out," she said.

Finally, the PSOE spokesperson in the southern Consistory proposed the creation of the Municipal Youth Council and that the socio-cultural centers be true leisure centers. For Cedrés, it is essential to promote the creation of new groups and associations, "since without these, true citizen participation is not achieved." In this context, she described it as "unacceptable" that socio-cultural centers are only open from Monday to Friday and with strict schedules, unless residents request it in writing.

"Citizen participation and the creation of neighborhood councils should be promoted in the municipality to give life to the centers and this would allow for extended hours and opening on weekends," the socialist councilor pointed out.

Although the motions presented by the PSOE representative finally received the support of the political groups, the councilor lamented "the lack of interest shown by the government group both in the informative commissions and during the plenary session."

"I was reproached for presenting the construction of the Wrestling Arena due to the economic situation of the City Council. The mayor herself told me that they were not going to comply with it but that they approved the motions. I do not want empty promises, I ask for courage and decision to carry out the projects that interest the residents of Yaiza," Cedrés concluded.
