The street vendors platform denounces the opening of a new illegal and private market in Teguise

The platform of street vendors of Lanzarote has denounced the opening of a new "illegal and private" market, which opened its doors inside the market of La Villa de Teguise. From this group they assure that they have contacted the City Council, from where they insist that "these gentlemen cannot set up a market, nor sell a pin in their enclosure".

According to the platform, the land where this new market has been located is listed as "socio-cultural land, never as commercial". It assures that the "creative cultural offer" of this new project was to offer "a large tent with beer for one euro and portions of paella and asadero for two euros". The platform insists that "their project in terms of the number of vendors is much more ambitious".

The street vendors of Lanzarote do not know who is behind the opening of this market, but they affirm that there may be some ex-politician involved. "We still do not know clearly who the promoters of this unimaginative idea are, but we will soon be able to say, since in these times everything is known. In the mouths of the people on the street are the names of an ex-politician, expelled from his party for putting his hand in the till and who also put it in some other for which he had to pay. Also that of a member of a family of important politicians and merchants of Lanzarote, who was charged in a very famous case of corruption on the island", affirms the platform.

From the platform of street vendors they assure that they have gone from being "the hippies of the market that nobody wanted much", to being "objects for others to make money". "We are witnessing a very dangerous decline for the markets and for the attraction that these exert on the public. Too much is boring and excess kills", warns this group.

Empty markets due to "disproportionate" expenses

The platform warns that some markets on the island have been left with a "very reduced" number of stalls due to the impossibility of maintaining the expenses, which are "disproportionate", compared to the "poor sales". "Soon, in Teguise, stalls will be put out to tender for new vendors, because the old owners have had to close down", he criticizes.

On the other hand, it also denounces that the future market of Puerto del Carmen "has been trying to auction around 60 stalls for almost a year, which is illegal, in order to put it into operation". "With all this panorama, it occurs to the gentlemen, mentioned before, to speculate with a private market inside a public one, which is already oversized", he affirms, in reference to the market of La Villa.

The platform considers that these gentlemen want to "take advantage of the work that other people have been doing for many years". "The vice that some have for easy, illegal money at the expense of others is still very present", he affirms.
