The island of La Graciosa has since last weekend with an amphibious wheelchair, which will make the beaches of the eighth island more accessible, thanks to this new provision made by the Department of Social Welfare of the Cabildo of Lanzarote.
The area councillor, Maite Corujo Fontes (PP), traveled last Friday to La Graciosa with members of the Association of Relatives of Alzheimer's and other Dementias of Lanzarote and Fuerteventura (AFA), the councillor of Public Works and Coordination and Project Planning, Saray Rodríguez (PP), and councillor of La Graciosa of the City Council of Teguise, Alicia Páez (CC), to deliver this chair that Emerlan will manage.
"As a result of an agreement with this emergency NGO that operates in La Graciosa, we have ceded the use of the chair to Emerlan so that it can manage it and channel its loan to people who need it," detailed the councillor of Social Welfare.
With an investment of around 3,000 euros, people with disabilities or mobility problems, even if they are mild or temporary, will also be able to enjoy the beaches of La Graciosa, and more specifically the Playa del Veril, in Caleta de Sebo, where this adapted chair will be permanently located.
Designed to enter the water and for displacements in the sand
From the Cabildo they explain that "this type of chairs are an element already integrated in the so-called accessible beaches and are designed not only to enter the water but also for displacements in the sand".
"Its large wheels allow easy mobility on difficult terrain of dry and wet sand. Its displacement requires a companion. The user cannot move autonomously. They are submersible and resistant to sea and pool water. Likewise, they have elements of great positive buoyancy, being very stable in the water, and their maintenance is as simple as washing it with fresh water after each use," they detail.
After the delivery of the chair, both councillors of the Cabildo held a meeting with the AFA Lanzarote and Fuerteventura group to listen to the needs and situation of the dependent elderly people who use the Cabildo's day center on the eighth island, where some other interventions are planned to improve this space, according to the institution.
