Ambros Martín, from Arrecife, former handball player and coach, will become the new female handball coach of the Royal Spanish Federation.
In an interview granted to Radio Lanzarote - Onda Cero this Thursday morning, he confessed that "it is an honor" to have been chosen to lead Las Guerreras, and recalls that "he has it stuck in his mind", since "when I was a player, I never had the opportunity to wear the Spanish National Team jersey."
Before this appointment, he had been a coach for other clubs, "but never with Spain," he points out.
The Lanzarote native has stated that "I am not yet the coach of the Spanish team", since "that will be from June onwards". Currently focused on the Győri team in Hungary, "I still have work to finish the season", he confirms.
An appointment that "motivates me especially", he acknowledges. "I know that good work is being done by the young players", he adds, and that "they want to do beautiful things with this sport."
He anticipates that "until December 31, 2024" he will be with the women's team, specifically in several championships such as the World Championship and the European Championship. Not forgetting the Olympic Games in Paris, for which "they hope" to qualify this summer.
In the case of women's sports, I know that they are "trying to give it the same space as men's sports", he says. Therefore, we see that "it is being taken into account more and more in the media in Spain." Although he acknowledges that in other countries such as Hungary, women's handball "attracts many media and fans" and he has a great following.
Being the one that "brings the most success" to "sports in our country", he specifies. With which "many medals have been harvested in major competitions", he argues.
Handball is "a sport that has always been rooted in the island of Lanzarote", he makes clear. But due to "leaving the island to study", due to the lack of a university, the young players who stand out, "consider whether it is worth continuing to play here", he adds. So he questions: "Why are we not able to get together and make a powerful team to fight with the big ones?".
"I haven't eaten 'papas arrugadas' daily for 30 years", says Ambros Martín
Ambros Martín is originally from Arrecife, but he has been "11 years outside of Spain" and "thirty years without eating 'papas arrugadas' daily", he confesses. This season, "I will be between Madrid, Zaragoza and the Canary Islands". And of course in Lanzarote "since I come every summer", he points out.
