The Lanzarote Health Services Management, attached to the Ministry of Health of the Government of the Canary Islands, has welcomed 23 new residents, twelve in medicine and eleven in nursing, who are beginning their training period in the health centers and the two hospitals on the island.

The event, held on Monday, June 8, at the Insular Council, was attended by the director of the Lanzarote Health Area, Erasmo García, the manager of Health Services, Pablo Eguia, and the head of studies of the Management, Verónica Gutiérrez; as well as the heads and tutors of the different teaching units.

The twelve new resident internal physicians (MIR) will specialize in Geriatrics, Family and Community Medicine, Pediatrics, Internal Medicine, and Traumatology. For their part, the eleven resident nurses will develop their training in the areas of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Geriatrics, Family and Community Nursing, and Pediatrics.

Currently, the Lanzarote Health Services Management hosts a total of 73 residents in training. This stage lasts between four or five years in the case of medicine, depending on the specialty, and two years for nursing. In both cases, the training program combines theoretical and practical activities, as well as care and research work.

Commitment to research and teaching

It should be recalled that this year the Doctor José Molina Orosa University Hospital has received accreditation from the Ministry of Health to train resident internal physicians in two new specialties: Anesthesiology and Resuscitation and General and Digestive Surgery; which are added to the five accredited ones. These additions endorse the effort made by the center's professionals and their commitment to research and teaching to guarantee solid training for future specialists.

The director of the Lanzarote Health Area, Erasmo García, welcomed the new residents and encouraged them to take advantage of this training period to grow both professionally and personally.

For his part, the manager of Health Services, Pablo Eguía, highlighted to the new residents the importance of working with commitment and vocation to become excellent specialists, capable of offering quality healthcare, always focused on the needs of patients and based on proximity and humanization of care.

The Head of Studies, Verónica Gutiérrez, highlighted the opportunity that the residency period represents for acquiring knowledge, skills, and clinical experience, and underscored the involvement of the teaching team and the collaboration of Primary and Hospital Care professionals, which are fundamental to guaranteeing excellent training.
