A man of about 61 years old has died on Wednesday afternoon while diving off Playa Chica, in Puerto del Carmen. After being rescued from the water, resuscitation maneuvers were performed on him at the pier, but they could not save his life.
The deceased, of Irish nationality but residing in Lanzarote, was diving when he apparently suffered a mishap. According to sources close to the case, the first indications are that he may have suffered a heart attack.
The event took place at around 3:30 p.m., when a diver alerted that there were two other divers asking for help in the water. Upon jumping into the sea and reaching the area, the Emerlan lifeguard confirmed that the affected person was in cardiorespiratory arrest.
The lifeguard removed his diving equipment and, with the help of a private zodiac that offers tourist activities in the area, took him to the pier.
There, first members of the Local Police and then personnel from Emerlan and the Canary Emergency Service performed resuscitation maneuvers for almost an hour, but without success. Finally, the SUC doctor could only certify his death.
The Civil Guard was in charge of the custody of the deceased until the arrival of the judicial authority and instructed the corresponding proceedings.
